The Moment of Silence
10/13/07
Illinois' state House of Representatives voted Thursday, to override Gov. Rod Blagojevich's veto of a moment-of-silence bill; effectively making law, provisions for all public schools in the state, to begin their days with a moment of silence.
___________
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, advocated instituting times during a public school day, for students to reflect on something higher than themselves.
“This is something that Rebbe spoke so strongly about, so we had each one of our emissaries contact their representatives, to explain the Rebbe's view on the bill.”
__________
In one of the many speeches, the Rebbe made on the subject, he said in 1984:
That the only solution to a dearth of morality, and to lessen juvenile delinquency, in a society whose children are wholly depended, on a public school education; is to begin a school day, with a moment of silence.
_________
In order that the students should realize, that there is a higher power, that they are accountable to. Who sees and knows all their actions.
They do not live in a jungle, rather the world has a purpose, and a higher goal. They are needed, to help the world achieve this goal.
And that, they have within themselves, infinite goodness.
